Can You Cancel and Get a Refund on Flights?

Want to change your travel plan? Book your travel and cancel it whenever you require, paying a nominal cancellation fee. But it would be much better if you could save this money. The airlines have clauses where a passenger can cancel their booking for free without paying any charges or fees. Continue to read and enlighten yourself with the policies, prices, and procedures for cancelling an air trip after booking.

What is the Airline Cancellation and Refund Policy?

Before you cancel your flight, it is in your best interest to inform yourself about the airline's policies regarding these services. This will save you plenty of money, and you can cancel without being charged. Read the points below and learn the airline policies for refunds and cancellations.

  • Passengers are advised to cancel their booking within 24 hours of their booking. These hours are risk-free, and passengers can make any change or cancel their tickets for free.
  • Once the flight has departed, passengers are not allowed to cancel their tickets. The ticket will be treated under a no-show policy, and the entire amount will be forfeited.
  • Flights cancelled from the airline’s end are completely refundable, or the airline may arrange another flight with no extra cost to the same destination.
  • Passengers who make their booking through a third party will have to contact the agent for any query related to cancellation or refund. The airline is not answerable to such passengers.
  • It is the passenger’s duty to inform the airline regarding their flight cancellation. Otherwise, the amount will be forfeited.
  • The refund will be credited to the original source of payment within 7 to 10 business days from the date the ticket was cancelled.
  • Any passenger unable to fly due to a medical reason must confront the airline and discuss their health issue. The airline will cancel the ticket for such passengers for free.
  • Only refundable tickets are eligible for a refund. Non-refundable tickets will get only the government taxes and charges.
  • A ticket applying for a refund must be unused. Tickets that are partially or fully used cannot be applied for a refund.

How do I Cancel and Apply for a Refund from the Airline?

Passengers who want to discontinue their travel with the airline must inform the airline in advance before the flight departs. If they fail to do this, the airline will not initiate any refund to such a passenger. Follow the procedure below to cancel and get a refund from the airline:

  • Visit the official website of the respective airline.
  • Search for the “Manage my Booking” option.
  • Enter the passenger’s last name and PNR number and click on retrieve booking to get the flight details.
  • Now, move to the “Cancel my Flight” option and get an online form.
  • Proceed to complete the form with flight and personal information.
  • Next, you will have to explain your reason for cancelling the flight and attach the related files.
  • Submit the form and receive a link to your registered mobile number.
  • Tap on the link and follow the on-screen instructions to apply for a refund.

After this, your job is done. Leave the page and relax; the airline will complete the formalities and process the refund amount to your bank account.

How Much does the Airline Charge to Cancel a Flight?

The cancellation charge depends on several factors and can vary from person to person and airline to airline. However, the average fee for most airlines is between $100 and $300. To know more, contact the agent of the respective airline.
