Flight cancellations are generally irritating and cause
confusion among the passengers. In case you find your flight
canceled, you should be aware of what your flight cancellation
rights are and how to claim them and get compensated. In most
circumstances, airlines will be required to compensate the
passenger in terms of a refund or an alternate travel. To start
with, check the airline cancellation policy and amass all the
relevant documents, including your booking confirmation. Either
use the customer service to file your claim or file it online as
soon as possible. Being aware of what can be done will enable you
to go through the process successfully and allow you to recover
your money within the shortest time possible.
You are entitled to either get your ticket refunded or be
moved to another flight. In case the airline informs you of the
cancellation without the specified time (less than 14 days) before
your initial departure date, you have a chance to claim flight
cancellation compensation. This payout could be between €250 to
€600 per passenger, depending on the distance of the flight that
you were supposed to be taking. Also, when waiting very long, you
have the right to free refreshments and drinks.
In the case of flight cancellations, it is also important to
realize that the refunding of tickets and compensation for
canceled flights are two different matters. In case your flight is
canceled by the airline company, you have the right to get the
full refund payment of your flight ticket or to be offered another
flight. Also, in case of a cancellation, once you have reached the
airport, you are entitled to care which involves two free phone
calls, faxes or emails besides refreshments of proportional to the
wait time and a stay at a hotel in case you have to be there at
night.
There are some situations, too, that will give you the right
to claim compensation in case of a flight cancellation:
With Regulation 261/2004 of the EU, airlines are obliged to
inform their passengers of their cancellations 14 days in advance.
In case of non-fulfillment of this, you can be entitled to
compensation for canceled flights between €250 and €600 per
passenger depending on the duration of the flight. This will also
be the case when there is short-notice rescheduling of flights.
The outlined conditions under which passengers can have a
right to compensation in case of a flight cancellation are stated
in the following table:
| Notification Period |
Alternative Flight Timing |
Right to Compensation/th>

In certain instances, the airlines are not able to inform
their passengers 14 days in advance of cancellation due to a
short-notice occurrence. In such cases, the reasons behind the
cancellation are explored to see whether one is supposed to be
paid compensation. Technical complications that lead to
cancellations usually fall into this category, as a normal part
of the operations of an airline, should not affect flight
schedules through canceled flights. Nevertheless, when facing
unexpected issues that the air company could not have foreseen,
they should prove that sensible precautions were taken in order
to prevent the cancellations.
It is necessary to point out that EU Regulation No.
261/2004 can be applied in the European Union. Either your flight
can leave the EU with any airline or come into the EU with an
EU-based carrier. Besides, it is your responsibility to get to
the airport with enough time in order to check in and board, as
long as the cancellations did not take place before your arrival.
Assuming that your flight passes the requirement regarding
the potential compensation in accordance with the time of
notification, you are eligible to obtain said compensation
provided that the following conditions are satisfied:
- It was the cancellation of the airline.
- you had registered in good time.
- Your aircraft was to depart to or arrive the EU and the
airline itself was an EU-based airline.
- It is a problem that manifested in the past six years.
If all criteria are fulfilled, the compensation amounts are
as follows:
- Short flights (up to 1500 km): €250

What are my Rights After a Flight is Rerouted or Canceled??
In case you experience excessive time before the scheduled
departure of a flight, you can get some perks on top of the
compensation you might be entitled to, whether the canceled
flight was intentional by the airline or not. An example would be
that the airline is supposed to supply the passengers with food
and refreshments. Two free telephone calls or emails are also
permitted for the passengers. These are the provisions that shall
apply in whatever circumstances, regardless of the basis on which
the cancellation is made, since it can be due to technical
problems, bad weather, or even strikes.
Flights Going Varied Distances get the Following Entitlement Regarding Delays:
- Short-haul Flights (less than 1500 km):In
case of delays (more than two hours), the passengers have the
right to free meals and beverages, two complimentary telephone
calls, emails or faxes.
- Medium Flights (1500 km to 3500 km): In
the event of the delay is 3 hours or more then free food and
beverages are provided to the passengers and 2 free
communications.
- Long-haul Journeys(greater than 3500):With
flights taking greater than 4 hours, the advantage of 2
complimentary calls/ Emails and complementary refreshments is
provided.
How Long do I Have to Claim Compensation?
According to the EU regulation 261/2004, passengers are
entitled to file a claim up to three years after the incident
date in the European Union (EU), except in those EU member states
where the required time limit is mentioned. Take the example of
Germany, where they have a three-year time limit which starts
after the end of the year of occurrence and UK which has up to
six years. The compensation also varies according to the time you
were informed, and the time when the other flight that was
suggested was available. Usually, you are entitled to
compensation when informed of the late booking less than 14 days
before the flight and when the airline was liable to do the
cancellation with compensation commencing between 250 euros and
600 euros depending on flight distance.
The United States (US) does not follow any federal legislation
enforcing the payment of flight
delays or cancellation compensation by the airlines except an
airlines refund cancelled flights in case of flight cancellation
where the passenger decides against travelling. Airlines do have
to issue refunds, yet they do not have to compensate for delays
and cancellations in any other manner. According to the US
Department of Transportation, compensation other than a refund is
a matter of the policy of each airline, and in general,
passengers are not entitled to receive automatic compensation
regarding such cancellations, delays in the US.
| Region |
Claim Period |
Notes |
| EU |
Up to 3 years (varies by country) |
Compensation under EU261/2004 if notified late and
airline responsible |
| US |
No statutory period for compensation claims |
Refund required if flight cancelled, additional
compensation not mandated by law |
Regarding your cancelled flight within the EU, you have to
face the local laws, as not every country is the same (e.g., UK:
6 years); regarding flights to/from the US, everyone depends on
the individual airline policies, and the federal law does not
require paying compensation
Checklist
of “Extraordinary Circumstances”?
The extraordinary circumstances include the incidents that
disrupt the flight but it is beyond the control of an airline.
These may be in the form of medical emergencies, national
strikes, major weather or air traffic control restrictions.
During such occasions, passengers are not usually supposed to
receive any compensation by the airlines. But the airline still
cannot just state that it was extraordinary circumstances to
evade the payment, but the company should demonstrate that it had
done everything possible to reduce the inconvenience.
Under a ruling of the European Court of Justice of 11 June
2020 (Case C-74/19), it is up to the airlines to argue that they
took all possible measures to reschedule the passengers as soon
as possible. This involves investigation of re-routing avenues in
their flights as well as in the flights of other airlines
including direct and indirect flights. Also, where there are
other means of transport, like a bus, train, or taxis that would
transport the passengers faster, airlines have to take this into
account.
Provided that during the investigations it is found that
the airline has not taken all reasonable actions in order to
prevent and/or lessen delays and cancellations, the passengers
might obtain compensation even in case that extraordinary
circumstances appear. This way, the fact of an extraordinary
event by itself is not a sufficient reason to exclude
compensation of passengers harmed by an airline.
How
Can I Ensure That My Future Flights Are Secure?
Delays and cancellations cannot be foreseen in the future,
but yet, you may take appropriate measures on your own to ensure
your rights in future flights. Once you submit your flight
information to our online compensation calculator prior to the
flights, we will keep track of the flights to check on delays or
cancellations.
In case your flight is disrupted, we will also inform you
in a timely manner of the relevant information regarding your
rights and we will also advise you that you are not entitled to
claim compensation in case of a cancellation or delay. In this
way, you will be up to date and ready during your trip.
Checklist: This is What you are Entitled to if Your Flight is Cancelled
List of what is your entitlement when your flight is

261/2004, the passenger rights as well as general best practice:
Right to Reimbursement or Rerouting:

provided with some other flight to your final destination in the
shortest time possible.
- Any alternative, made at your convenience, may involve

notifying, compensation of between 2508600 euros with respect to
the passenger may be payable.
- The compensation normally applies when the airline
advises you with less than 14 days before the scheduled
departure date and the airline is one that is responsible of the
cancellation.
- When cancelation has been made because of extraordinary

weather, strikes, air traffic control restrictions) the airline
does not have to pay since it did everything possible to prevent
such a situation.
Right to Care and Assistance While Waiting:
- You can claim free refreshments and meals fitting to the
waiting time should you be experiencing a long time wait
occasioned by a cancellation.

- You should have confirmed at the required time, and that
time is usually at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled
departure.
- The flight had taken off or landed in an EU airport

airline).
- The last six years (different in each country) are when
you experienced the cancellation.
Additional Notes:
- In case another method of transportation takes you to
your destination quicker (by bus, taxi, train) then it is
something that the airlines must keep in mind.
- Airlines should demonstrate that they have tried every
possible option of reb scenes including other carriers and
indirect routes.
You are allowed to make a compensation even when travelling
on a business trip or on a package tour.

in any way to compensate in case of a flight cancellation but it
is required to make a refund should you decide not to board the
flight.
